MDOT launches poster contest to encourage riding bikes

JACKSON, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is partnering with Saris Cycling Group, a manufacturer of bicycle racks and cycling training products, to launch a poster contest to get fifth graders to think about the benefits of riding a bicycle.  The contest calls for 5th grade students to create a poster around the theme #longfortheride.  The purpose of the contest is to promote youth riding bicycles as a way to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Over the years, the contest themes have focused on one of the simple benefits of riding a bike. In 2013 and 2014, the poster contest winner came from Mississippi, further showing the state’s growing bike culture. The 2014 National Poster Contest winner, Lily, hails from Starkville.

One winner will be selected from each state to receive a bike, helmet and bell.  One national winner will win a trip to the 2016 National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C. and their school will receive a bicycle rack that provides space to park twenty bikes and a bike/walk tracking system called The Hub.

“Mississippi is making a concerted effort to improve the health and wellness of its young citizens,” said Transportation Commissioners Dick Hall, Tom King and Mike Tagert, in a joint statement from the Mississippi Transportation Commission. “This poster contest is a great way to encourage the state’s youth to ride bicycles and engage in physical activities, particularly as an alternative means of transportation to and from school.”

“With spring right around the corner, this is a great opportunity to get our students thinking about bicycling,” said Lindsey Netherland, MDOT Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator.  “Bicycling is a great way for students to enjoy exercising while having fun at the same time.”

The deadline for the poster contest is October 21.
