CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) - More than one dozen World War II veterans and their families from across the U.S. were at Camp Shelby Friday, participating in a reunion of the 65th Infantry Division.
That unit was formed and trained at Camp Shelby before serving under the command of famed Gen. George S. Patton in Europe in 1945.
The 65th fought in several combat engagements and liberated the Mauthausen Concentration Camp near Linz, Austria.
Reunion activities included a bus tour of the post and a luncheon at the post's All Ranks Club.
In 1991, the 65th became the first division to dedicate a monument on the grounds of the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum.
The unit's last visit to Camp Shelby was in 2010.
