World War II veterans hold reunion at Camp Shelby

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from Camp Shelby.

Veterans and Families of the 65th Infantry Division will visit Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center on Friday, September 18, 2015 for a tour and special luncheon hosted at the Camp Shelby All Ranks Club. This tour is part of the 65th Infantry Division's annual reunion of veterans and their Families scheduled over the course of a few days every year, and this year is the last scheduled reunion.

The division formed at Camp Shelby in 1943 and later served in Europe under the command of General George S. Patton. The 65th Division, also known as the "Halberd Division," fought in several combat actions and liberated the Mauthasuen Concentration Camp near Linz, Austria.

At the war's end, the division continued to occupy areas of western Austria where they linked with a Soviet Army encamped across the Danube River. General Patton held joint reviews of the 65th Division with his Soviet counterparts and personally awarded medals to many of the soldiers during the reviews.

The 65th Division disbanded in late 1945, but the veterans of the division formed the 65th Division Association and continued regular annual reunions of the veterans and their Families.  The veterans of the 65th Infantry Division dedicated a monument on the grounds of the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby during their 1991 reunion. The 65th Division Association last visited Camp Shelby in 2010.

Confirmed Media are invited to attend this reunion event in honor of the World War II Veterans of the 65th Infantry Division and their Families during the luncheon and exhibit portion of the reunion at Camp Shelby All Ranks Club scheduled to begin at 11:30.

Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center continues to meet the challenges of providing for the nation's defense by serving as a premier training center for the Mississippi National Guard and neighboring states. The Camp Shelby mission has evolved in planning, developing, and providing a diverse and demanding training environment that changes constantly to meet the new and emerging threats to our nation's security.
