HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The following is a news release from The University of Southern Mississippi

The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra opens its 96th season Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Mannoni Performing Arts Center on the Hattiesburg campus. In true gala opening style, patrons are encouraged to dress in their best fashion for this special opening entitled, “New Acquaintances and Old Friends.”

“Similar to glamorous openings at the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Ballet, this is the Pine Belt’s chance to ramp up the glamor and enjoy a first rate musical evening with the incomparable Symphony Orchestra,” said Jay Dean, music director.

Having performed with classical celebrities from Plácido Domingo, Renée Fleming, Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma, to popular icons including Ray Charles, Patti LaBelle, Dionne Warwick and the Pointer Sister, the Symphony at Southern Miss has become a statewide treasure for its incomparable musicianship and innovative programming.

The concert features three works. The two “New Acquaintances” are both world premieres. First, is Nostalgic Dances by Mississippi award-winning composer Luigi Zaninelli. This performance also features Mississippi pianist, Theresa Sanchez.

The second premiere on the program, Radiant Dances for Horn and Strings, is by Iowa composer James Naigus who is internationally known particularly for works for the French horn. The soloist for this work, Dr. Jacquelyn Adams, was recently appointed as a full-time faculty member at The University of Southern Mississippi. She also commissioned this work. Both premieres will be conducted by Ivan del Prado, assistant conductor for the Symphony Orchestra.

On the second half of the program, the “Old Friend,” is Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 — one of the most well known works in the orchestral repertoire. It is an elegant symphonic piece and a “tour de force” for the orchestra.

The anticipation is palpable as orchestra members prepare for a gala opening evening. This also marks the first orchestra concert on the renovated stage of the Mannoni Performing Arts Center.

Season and individual tickets are available at the Southern Miss Ticket Office by calling 601.266.5418 or 800.844.8425 or visiting www.southernmisstickets.com
