LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Sunday kicked off Child Passenger Safety Week, and the Laurel Police Department is showing its support by giving out free car seats this weekend.
Officers are setting up checkpoints for car seat safety this Saturday at Walgreens in Laurel from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A limited number of car seats will be given out to families in need.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car crashes are the leading cause of death for children 1 to 13 years old. NHTSA officials said many of those deaths and injuries could have been prevented in the children were in the proper car seat, booster or wearing a seat belt.
