HHS hosts blood drive for Sickle Cell Awareness Month

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg High School hosted a blood drive on its campus Tuesday.

The drive is in conjunction with National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and the school hopes to increase the awareness of the blood needs of sickle cell patients.

That need is something that the Hattiesburg High School family is very aware of as one of the members of the senior class died this summer from complications of sickle cell anemia.

"Today's goal was to get 75 units," Katie Martin of United Blood Services said. "That may take up to 105 donors going through the interview process. Our goal is to make a major impact on our sickle cell patients."
