New undergraduate enrollment up at USM

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - New student enrollment is up at the University of Southern Mississippi. School officials said 3,197 new undergraduate students enrolled for classes this fall in Hattiesburg, on the Gulf Coast and online.

That's a 2.7 percent increase over fall of 2014.

That includes record enrollment in the Honors College, which now has 603 students.

New freshmen at USM are also entering school with a higher average GPA.

School officials said the average of 3.27 for first-time, full-time freshmen is up from the average of 3.26 for the fall of last year.

And school officials said the new students are coming in with an average ACT score of 22.7, the highest in USM's history.
