GOODMAN – Holmes Community College used a devastating ground attack and timely passing to hand Pearl River its first defeat of the season 34-14 at Ras Branch Stadium.
The Bulldogs (1-1) ran the ball 69 times for 368 yards, and added 182 yards in passing.
Holmes set the tone from the opening kickoff, driving for a touchdown. PRCC took a brief 7-6 lead on a 57-yard touchown pass from Mack Lowrie to Cameron Bolton, then got a fumble inside the Holmes 10-yard line.
However, the Wildcats failed to score and a 22-yard field goal attempt was wide right. The Bulldogs took the ensuing kickoff and regained the lead on a 60-yard pass play from Dejerric Bryant to D.J. Montgomery.
Holmes led 20-7 at halftime and dominated the second half.
The Wildcats were held to 16 total yards rushing, and Lowrie was sacked five times for 42 yards in losses.
Pearl River opens its home schedule – and its South Division slate – next week against Hinds.
