BILOXI, MS (WDAM) - A record number of students are attending William Carey University's Tradition Campus on the Coast.
The school reports that a total of 1,154 students are taking classes on the Biloxi campus this fall. That is a 22 percent increase over last year.
WCU administrators say the growth is good news, but it's presenting challenges, because they are outgrowing their campus.
It opened just six years ago.
"(Tradition Campus) was built for 750 students (and) we're one-third larger than capacity," said Tommy King, president of William Carey University.
"We started (on the Coast) by holding classes in schools and churches 40 something years ago, then we got our own facility, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Now, we've rebuilt and we've got to start searching for the money to build the next building in the development of the campus."
WCU also has record enrollment in its School of Education. 1,270 students are enrolled this semester.
That is a 13.5 percent increase over last fall.
