PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Richton man is behind bars facing felony drug charges after a safety checkpoint led Perry County authorities to drugs.
Dexta Husband, 29, was arrested and charged with possession of meth with intent to distribute, simple assault on a police officer, and resisting arrest last night in Perry County.
"Officers had a checkpoint set up on Highway 29 south of New Augusta when a vehicle approached the checkpoint, and while the New Augusta officer was talking to the driver he saw an individual trying to hide something in the rear seat," said Perry County Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith.
"When the officer asked the occupant what he was doing the occupant exited the vehicle and began to run," said Smith. "The officer and a deputy gave chase and apprehended the suspect in a wooded area, the suspect attempted to fight the officers but they took him into custody after having deployed a taser," said Smith.
Officers took Husband back to the checkpoint where they say they located several grams of crystal meth.
Husband has a hold on him from Mississippi Department of Corrections for parole violation, and is being held in the Perry County Adult Detention facility awaiting a first appearance.
