HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A public forum will be held Tuesday evening at the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center in Hattiesburg to discuss the public education funding ballot initiative.
Initiative 42 is the ballot initiative that will be on the November ballot that will require the state legislature to adequately fund the state's public schools through the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP). It calls for a court to intervene should the legislature fail to fund the program.
The legislature, which passed MAEP in 1997, has only fully funded the program twice since its adoption. They have created an alternative to Initiative 42, called Initiative 42-A, that would fund schools but would not have judicial oversight should the program not be fully funded.
Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann will lead Tuesday's open meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
