MDOT invests in Mississippi's public transit system

The Mississippi Transportation Commission (MTC) recently approved the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) awarding grants to multiple public transit authorities across the state for maintenance and improvement projects.
 
“Mississippi’s public transit system is the main source of transportation for many of our citizens,” said Transportation Commissioners Dick Hall, Tom King and Mike Tagert in a joint statement by the MTC. “People are our greatest commodity, and these grants will help make needed improvements that will continue to support local economic growth and development.”
 
Grants were approved for the following public transit authorities in Mississippi. 

  • $128,390- Bolivar County Council on Aging, Inc., Cleveland: Vehicle match of $50,000 for three 12-passenger vans, a 17-passenger American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant bus and two 25-passenger buses, and $78,390 for vehicle insurance, 
  •  $33,881- Claiborne County Human Resource Agency, Port Gibson: Vehicle match of $14,481 for one 17-passenger ADA compliant bus and one seven-passenger van, and $19,400 for vehicle insurance.
  • $73,332 - NRoute Transit Commission, Vicksburg: Vehicle match of $53,332 for four 12-passenger vans and three 25-passenger ADA compliant buses, and $20,000 for vehicle insurance.
  • $16,000 - Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, Choctaw: Vehicle insurance.
  • $9,100 - Madison County Citizens Service, Canton: Vehicle insurance.
  • $13,400 - Copiah County Human Resource Agency, Hazlehurst: Vehicle insurance.
  • $480,000 - City of Jackson, Department of Planning and Development: Operating assistance for costs to run public transit system.
  • $68,573 - Aaron Henry Community Health Services Center, Clarksdale: Vehicle match of $33,573 for two 25-passenger ADA compliant buses and one 27-passenger ADA compliant bus, and $35,000 for vehicle insurance.
  • $58,692 - Mississippi Valley State University Mass Transit, Itta Bena: Vehicle match of $38,692 for one 17-passenger ADA compliant bus, one 25-passenger ADA compliant bus and one 29-passenger ADA compliant bus, and $20,000 for vehicle insurance.
  • $14,400 - United Community Action Committee, Ashland: Vehicle insurance.
  • $21,156 - Northeast Mississippi Community Services, Booneville: Vehicle insurance.
  • $26,277 - City of Oxford-Oxford University Transit: Vehicle match for two 25-passenger ADA compliant buses.

 MDOT’s responsibilities include maintaining and improving the state’s highways and interstates, but also focus on providing a safe intermodal transportation network for airports, ports and waterways, railroads and public transit. Each of these modes of transportation plays a vital role in transporting people, goods and services that promote economic growth and development throughout Mississippi.
