More than 200 people and lots of their four-legged friends ran through The Avenues section of Hattiesburg Saturday morning to raise money for an organization that provides service dogs to people in need.

They participated in the inaugural Dog Days 5K run and two mile walk. It was a fundraiser for Hub City Service Dogs.

Organizers hoped to raise $10,000, which will be used to train and provide service dogs for people with various types of physical disabilities or medical conditions.

Coach Joe Hartfield had big shoes to fill when he stepped in the season following Hattiesburg’s 2006 state championship, when the Tigers were led by Larry Knight. Twelve years later, Hartfield has brought the Tigers their sixth state title and the first in his 20-year coaching career. "[Hattiesburg] won it in 2006 under coach Knight and coach Knight left a huge legacy to fill,” Hartfield said. “We're just glad to be able to hang another banner."
