HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Rail car traffic and petroleum tankers are the focus of a training seminar for first responders at the Lake Terrace Convention Center this week in Hattiesburg.
Derailment scenarios are the primary focus for area first responders.
The Hattiesburg railroads currently transport grain, ethanol, and petroleum based materials. In the future hazardous pipeline materials could be added to that list.
The journey these materials take from the manufacturer to delivery site is normally made without incident, but the city's first responders say they want to be prepared for any possibility.
Representatives from local, state and federal governments are attending the two-day seminar. The group will work through table top exercises to simulate an accident in order to identify what gaps in communication would exist before a real life situation occurs.
