HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Perry County man died early Saturday morning when he was struck by several vehicles as he was walking along Highway 49.

Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict said the victim, Lester Pipkins, 52, of Richton, had just walked out of the emergency room at Forrest General Hospital when the incident happened around 12:50 a.m.

Benedict said Pipkins was walking north in the southbound lane near Cuco's Restaurant when he was hit by a military van and several other cars.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Benedict said it was an accident and said alcohol may have played a role in his death.

No charges were filed.

    The campus of William Carey was calm as the clock struck midnight and the date turned to January 21, 2017. Then-freshman soccer player Taylor Gautreaux turned in at about 1 a.m. She would be awoken two hours later to the sounds of a violent tornado just outside her dorm room wall.
