JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from the Jones County Sheriff's Department

Over the past several months, the Jones County Sheriff’s Department’s Narcotics Investigators have been involved in an ongoing investigation of the distribution of illegal drugs in the Hebron and Soso area.  171 Summerland Road was identified on multiple occasions as a likely source location of illegal drugs.  Kevin Knight, 42 of Soso, has also been identified on multiple occasions as a likely source of illegal drugs.

On Thursday, August 13, 2015, JCSD Narcotics Investigators and the Crime Suppression Unit were conducting surveillance in the Soso community and initiated a traffic stop of a vehicle on Andy Knight Road just off of Hwy 533.  As deputies approached and made contact with the driver, he accelerated the car, swerved toward a deputy and drove forward fleeing the scene.  Deputies recognized the driver as Knight.  Deputies pursued the vehicle and several other units responded to assist.  Knight drove the vehicle at a high rate of speed with disregard for the traffic and public safety of bystanders.  He refused to stop the vehicle despite being followed by several marked law enforcement units with emergency lights and sirens activated. Knight eventually stopped the vehicle and was taken into custody.  Deputies could smell the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.  A search of the vehicle revealed several items including two clear plastic bags containing suspected marijuana.  Deputies learned that Knight has a suspended driver's license.  He was transported to the Jones County Jail.

Shortly after his arrest, JCSD executed a search warrant at Knight's residence.  The residence was occupied by his wife, Marie Knight, 39 of Soso, and two small children.  During the search, several items were recovered including additional suspected marijuana, scales, packaging and other items.  Marie Knight was transported to the Jones County Jail.

Kevin Knight is charged with: Felony Fleeing, Simple Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of Marijuana w/ Intent to Distribute and Conspiracy to Deliver a Controlled Substance.  Marie Knight is charged with Conspiracy to Deliver a Controlled Substance.

Initial appearances are scheduled for 2:30 PM Friday, August 14, 2015 for both individuals at Jones County Justice Court.
