ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) - Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation awarded JCJC a $272,800 grant Tuesday morning that focused on improving the health of the college's students and personnel. The check presentation and official launch of the grant took place at JCJC Fitness Center in the D.O. Thomas P.E. Building, and followed with faculty and staff activities at the A.B. Howard Gym.
Others who took part in the grant check presentation included JCJC officials (Jesse Smith, VP Finee Ruffin and VP Sam Jones) and JCJC's Wellness Committee (Emileigh Sones, Katie Herrington, Pam Brownlee, Dolores Deasley, Beth McDaniel, Sonya Dykes, Lauren Pittman and Zackary Allen).
The proposal, "Next Steps in Health," is the wellness initiative implemented over the next year to encourage employees and students' participation in the program, according to the media release. The JCJC wellness committee developed the proposal in the 2014 fall semester and it was accepted for funding by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, December 2014. The initiative will begin with the 2015 fall semester. The partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation will provide a circuit training facility adjacent to the Bobcat Fitness Center, a professional trainer for the Fitness Center, a wellness coach for individualized health planning and consultation, a recipe exchange-to flip unhealthy but popular dishes into healthier dishes, healthy food preparations & demonstrations with samples, competitive physical activities, and participation awards.
The event was launched by Vice President of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation Sheila Grogan, along with college representatives.
