New program offers free legal & financial counseling to Pine Belt

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from Christian Services, Inc. and Leadership Pinebelt.

Christian Services, Inc. and Leadership Pinebelt have joined forces to launch Thrive, a new program which offers free financial and legal counseling to people in the Hattiesburg community seeking assistance.

"We recognized a need in our community to provide people with life skills training," said Vanessa Henson, Thrive Coordinator. "Caring about people and giving them the right tools is sometimes just what they need to make major improvements in their lives."

The program was a dream of Christian Services, set into motion by a group from Leadership Pinebelt's Class of 2015 who offered to enhance and sustain it.  Through organizing volunteers, adding new components, branding the program and seeking donations, the group has provided groundwork for the program to continue and grow.

"We want to see positive outcomes in our community by empowering people with the life skills that they need to not only survive, but succeed," said Bobby Moore of Leadership Pinebelt. "It's our hope that Thrive will give people the power to become debt-free or the chance to obtain things that have been out of their reach due to their circumstances."

The legal counseling component will kick off on Wednesday, August 12, and will continue to offer services on the second Wednesday of every month from 1pm to 5pm. Interested persons must pre-register to be paired with an attorney. Common issues for legal counseling include child support, expungement, visitation and divorce. The four-session financial counseling component meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays the first and second weeks of each month with each session building upon the previous. This component teaches participants money management, debt-payment, budgeting and credit repair. Both programs are free and open to the public.

With the hope of growing its programs in the future to provide more life skills training, Thrive will continue the Christian Services work of providing much-needed life-assistance to the Hattiesburg area and connect the skills of organizations and individuals to their community.
