LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Many parents were being cheered on as they dropped their children off for the first day of school Thursday.

Laurel's Salvation Army held a rally outside of Oak Park Elementary school in the morning. The organization applauded parents as they walked by and especially celebrated when they saw a father dropping off his kids.

They organized the rally in hopes the event would help build a better relationship between fathers and their children.

“I think it greatly exceeded our expectations,” said Captain Cristy Lind. “We saw them carrying backpacks, we saw them carrying Kindergarten mats, we saw them holding the hands of their daughters and some sons. It's just fabulous to see that, to see the love and to see the commitment to be involved in their children's lives.”

The Salvation Army was also present at Maddox, Watkins High School and Laurel Middle School.
