HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Forrest County election commissioner said voter turnout was low throughout the county as of mid-afternoon.

District 5 Election Commissioner Sue Polk said the Thames precinct was the busiest, with 587 of the more than 2,000 registered voters casting a ballot as of 3:00 p.m.

Polk said turnout for Democrats was low Tuesday, with the majority of the voters at the Pinecrest precinct voting Republican. There were 182 total voters there as of 3:00 p.m.

The Rowan precinct had 86 total voters with only one Republican casting a ballot just before 3:00 Tuesday afternoon.

Polk said the precincts in Petal have been busy due to two circuit clerk candidates (Reid and Wilkes) being from the area.

Polls close at 7 p.m.
