Southern Miss athletic director Bill McGillis announced the campaign for a $2 million student-athlete academic facility named in honor of former football coach Jeff Bower, Thursday.
"When everybody comes on this campus and visits The Rock and sees his name on the (Bower) Academic Excellence Center, they're going to know for certain what he was all about," McGillis said.
The facility will feature 9,819 square feet of resources for Golden Eagle student-athletes and the school explained they are $860,000 away from reaching their goal to begin construction. The three-story complex is set to be built under the west stands of M.M. Roberts Stadium.
"We've needed this for a long time just to put it very simply and it's going to be great for our student-athletes," Bower said. "Even though we've been successful in doing a good job here of graduating student-athletes this is going to help."
The facility is being designed by Populous.
