Hattiesburg Schools host back-to-school rally

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hundreds of students in the Hattiesburg Public School District are ready to head back to school, thanks to an annual rally held Wednesday night.

Hattiesburg Schools hosted a motivational event at the C.E. Roy Community Center.

Individual schools, businesses and organizations such as the Library of Hattiesburg, Petal and Forrest County and the Hattiesburg Arts Council were available to provide information or answer questions.

Children also received back backs and school supplies.

"We like to motivate the kids, get them excited about coming back to school," Jas Smith with Hattiesburg Schools said. "All the kids like having a new back pack and new school supplies, that's exciting. But, we also take this opportunity to get vital information to our parents and our families."

"It's been a good event, just being able to get some free supplies, just hearing about the things going on in the community," said Devon Clay, a parent of a second grade student.

"I just moved here from Chicago, so I'm not from down here, so everything is like really new to me (and) it's been a lot of help," said Caprina Smalley, another parent who has a child in the 11th grade.

All nine schools in the Hattiesburg School District were represented at the event.
