Laurel police arrest man for kidnapping, rape

Christopher McCarty, 35 Christopher McCarty, 35
LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Christopher McCarty, 35, was taken into custody by the Laurel Police Department on Tuesday after authorities said he allegedly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend at knife-point on Sunday. The victim was held against her will at his residence until Tuesday when she was able to make her escape.

She ran to a neighbor’s house, who then took her to the police department where she alerted them about the incident.

McCarty is charged with kidnapping, rape and aggravated domestic assault. He made his initial appearance today before Laurel Municipal Court Judge Kyle Robertson, who set his bond at $250,000.

Michael Reaves, sergeant with the Laurel Police Department, said the alleged victim did the right thing in coming to authorities with information about the attack.

“She suffered some facial trauma and other injuries; she also attests that she was raped by the individual.” Reaves said, “These things often go on behind closed doors and they are not know to a lot of people or the public but if you’re a victim of domestic violence, obviously you need to one, get yourself out of that situation and contact us so we can handle that because most of the time these things may start out small but they escalate to something more severe.”

There was an order for McCarty not to have contact with the alleged victim before the attack took place.
