HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Mississippi's annual sales tax holiday is this weekend, July 31 – Aug. 1.
The tax-free weekend will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and end at midnight on Saturday. Clothing and footwear are exempt from sales tax during the holiday period.
"It's going to be crazy," Shoe Dept. Manager Michelle Godwin said.
Signs are up and several stores are making sure their shelves are stocked.
"We have been putting out all of our new shoes, lots of kid's shoes, lots of bookbags, constant markdowns," Godwin said.
Many retail stores are expecting it to be one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.
"It's right up there with Black Friday and Christmas," Journeys Co-Manager Nate Edmond said.
Clothes and shoes priced less than $100 will be exempt from the sales tax. Accessories do not qualify for the tax free holiday, but some stores are making exceptions.
Some stores have extended their hours this weekend and are looking forward to a busy two days.
"We're hiring temps just to have enough people to help people on the sales floor," Godwin said. "It's going to be kind of crazy, we're excited though and ready."
