HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Hattiesburg business group has recognized a future student at The University of Southern Mississippi for outstanding academics and leadership.

The Hub City Business Network presented its first-ever scholarship Tuesday to Sophia Fokakis. It totaled $1,000.

Fokakis is a graduate of Presbyterian Christian School who will be major in nursing at Southern Miss in the fall.

The Hub City Business Network is a referral-based organization of small business owners and employees.

"I'm so excited, it's going to help a lot," Fokakis said. "I played a lot of sports, so I was the team captain of the softball team (and) I played volleyball, I was on the student council."

"We looked at grade point average, we weighed extra-curricular activities (and) how long they've been involved in extra-curricular activities," said Brian Saffle, president of the Hub City Business Network.

That group meets every Tuesday.
