LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

The Laurel Police Department is now accepting applications for their Citizens Police Academy.

The academy is designed to allow concerned Jones County and Laurel citizens the chance to gain a better understanding as to how and why a police department operates.  The program will give residents first-hand information and also give them the opportunity to interact with department members.

The first class will be held October 1 at the Laurel Police Department Training Center located at 730 Hillcrest Drive. Classes will be from 6 – 9 p.m. every Thursday for 12 weeks.

The program is not designed to make residents police officers, but operates for the sole purpose of educating the public and building better relationships between citizens and police.

The academy will conclude with a graduation ceremony and dinner.

Those interested in taking part in the academy can pick up an information packet and application at the Laurel Police Department.  Only a certain amount of applicants will be accepted into the academy.  Applications must be completed and turned in by August 28.
