PEARL, MS -- Andrew Barbosa held the Mobile BayBears to one hit over six frames to lead the Mississippi Braves to a 2-1 victory in front of 4,296 fans at Trustmark Park Saturday night. The series finale is slated for 5:00 PM Sunday.
Mississippi (17-12, 50-47) scored two runs on three hits while Mobile (17-11, 51-46) plated one run on four hits. The M-Braves pitching staff combined with Barbosa to hold the BayBears to just one hit until the ninth inning. Barbosa (3-1) walked two and struck out seven to pick up the win.
The M-Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second. Kevin Ahrens doubled and moved to third on a ground. He came in to score on a Matt Kennelly sacrifice fly to center field.
In the third, Matt Lipka singled and took second on Andrew Barbosa's sacrifice bunt. Eric Garcia later delivered a RBI-single to right field, extending the Braves lead to 2-0.
Jack Reinheimer and Zach Borenstein started the top of the ninth with base hits. Garrett Weber later delivered a two-out RBI-single to left field, cutting the Braves lead to 2-1.
Kyle Kinman made his M-Braves debut, fanning two in one inning. Mark Lamm worked a scoreless eighth. Jason Hursh (S, 2) came on in the ninth. He gave up a run on three hits but notched the save.
Blayne Weller (1-3) gave up two earned runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out four batters in six innings of work.
The M-Braves send right-hander Lucas Sims (0-0, 4.50) to the hill in Sunday's series finale at Trustmark Park. He'll counter BayBears righty John Omahen (3-0, 4.34). First pitch is slated for 5:00 PM. Gates open at 4:00 PM.
