Online group thanks Hub City for new health program

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - An online organization for mothers is praising the city of Hattiesburg for its efforts to improve the health of children. presented a thank you card to Mayor Johnny Dupree and the Hattiesburg City Council at the Hattiesburg Zoo Saturday morning.

It included dozens of signatures from mothers across the state, thanking the city for its new E-3 Health Initiative.

That program's goal is to boost enrollment of eligible children and families in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

"Making sure children are covered with health insurance, making sure they have access to healthcare, making sure that they can go see the doctor, MomsRising is really supportive of that and we're happy they're doing that for the city of Hattiesburg," said Kristina Cole, a representative of

"We're trying to make sure that they have a physician they can go to, preventive healthcare, that's what CHIP and Medicaid is all about and so, we're connecting those people to healthcare," said Johnny Dupree, mayor of Hattiesburg.

The E-3 Initiative is being funded by a grant from the National League of Cities.

City officials hope to reduce the number of uninsured families by 50 percent.
