HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The University of Southern Mississippi is getting a new honor for its commitment to helping veterans who are students there.
Southern Miss has been designated a "Purple Heart University" by the national branch of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The "Purple Heart" is awarded to service personnel wounded in combat.
Currently, there are about two dozen Purple Heart recipients attending USM.
"We're excited with this designation to have also two Purple Heart scholarships that will be available in the spring," said Doug Robinson, veteran outreach coordinator at USM's Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families.
Last year, Southern Miss was designated a "Military Friendly School" by a ratings organization called, Victory Media, Incorporated.
