JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Due to the recent Supreme Court ruling and his beliefs in the biblical view of marriage between a man and a woman, Jones County Circuit Clerk Candidate Kirk Landrum has dropped out of the race.
Landrum removed his name from being considered for the office of Circuit Clerk of Jones County Tuesday.
"This decision has been made with much thought and conviction, and I cannot in good conscience, put my name on a license for same gender marriage," said Landrum in a statement. "As a Christian I believe marriage is an institution created by God, not government intervention. I am thankful to be a resident of Jones County and blessed to be able to call this my home. I would like to thank all those who have supported me, and I would like to ask you to continue to support and pray for those in our government to make decisions based on the will of the people."
Since Landrum dropped out after the deadline, his name will appear on the ballots during the primary election.
Landrum is the third circuit clerk in the Pine Belt to drop out of the race due to the Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage.
