HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A  longtime Hattiesburg restaurant that was the scene of a mass shooting three years ago will close soon.

Cucos Mexican Restaurant is shutting down Aug. 1 after more than 30 years in the Hub City.

Owner Ricardo Mussiett said competition from other Mexican restaurants has hurt business, but he said the restaurant never recovered from the April 2, 2012 shooting spree that wounded five people.

The shooter is now in prison.

"That really is the main reason why I'm closing, because of the shooting," Mussiett said. "My business dropped like over 60 percent of the revenue and has been on a losing streak for the last two-and-a-half years, ever since the shooting happened."

Mussiett has owned Cucos for the last seven years.

It originally opened in the mid-1980s.

William Carey came from destruction to full restoration. Sophomore Cassidy Monk says, “The lord has just delivered us from such a tragic event..."

The campus of William Carey was calm as the clock struck midnight and the date turned to January 21, 2017. Then-freshman soccer player Taylor Gautreaux turned in at about 1 a.m. She would be awoken two hours later to the sounds of a violent tornado just outside her dorm room wall.
