Joe's Viewpoint: Kate Steinle

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

On July 1st, 32-year-old Kate Steinle was killed while walking on a San Francisco pier. Her alleged killer is 45-year-old Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez. He is a criminal undocumented immigrant from Mexico who has been deported five times.

It is frustrating to me that when a horrific crime like this occurs the subject matter of the debate purposefully gets scattered and the most crucial element of the crime gets lost in an ever-broadening conversation over border security and poor, largely law-abiding undocumented immigrants. While these other items are worthy of attention, the fact is that our country needs legislation to deal with criminal illegals like Mr. Lopez-Sanchez and the so-called sanctuary cities that decide to look the other way. By broadening the debate, we only reduce the chances of anything getting done. So let’s focus on criminal aliens and how to keep them from harming innocent citizens of our country.

This is today's viewpoint.
