Laurel continues enrichment program, LHS graduate speaks highly of education

Kids in Laurel packed the L.T. Ellis Center for its annual Inspiring Youth Summer Enrichment Program. Kids in Laurel packed the L.T. Ellis Center for its annual Inspiring Youth Summer Enrichment Program.
LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Kids in Laurel packed the L.T. Ellis Center for its annual Inspiring Youth Summer Enrichment Program. The program includes team and character building activities to encourage students to achieve their fullest potential. Special speakers were on hand such as Washington Redskin player and Laurel High School graduate Akeem Davis who spoke to the kids about staying in school and taking their education serious.

The program also includes activities such as basketball, soccer and swimming as well as free meals. It began June 31 and runs through July 31 and is open to all Jones County kids from ages 8-14. This is the sixth year the program has been held at the L.T. Davis Center in Laurel.

    Since the EF-3 tornado landed last year, William Carey University has spent the entire year working to rebuild their campus. “The feeling that we couldn't recover was pretty widespread but they didn't know our students, faculty and employees and our determination,” says President Dr. Tommy King. William Carey came from destruction to full restoration. Sophomore Cassidy Monk says, “The lord has just delivered us from such a tragic event..."

    The campus of William Carey was calm as the clock struck midnight and the date turned to January 21, 2017. Then-freshman soccer player Taylor Gautreaux turned in at about 1 a.m. She would be awoken two hours later to the sounds of a violent tornado just outside her dorm room wall.
