HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - It is out with the old and in with the new for Southern Miss.
Starting Wednesday, students and fans can buy merchandise bearing the new eagle head logo.
But in late 2014, USM notified licensees, vendors and retail outlets that the university would no longer approve the sale of the merchandise that contained the old eagle head logo after December 31, 2015.
"So essentially that gave (fans) a little over a year to phase that out," said Brent Jones, USM associative athletic director of marketing & communications. "And so because they knew that a new eagle head logo would be coming, they've done sales, they've done clearances and they have gotten rid of a lot of that logo now allowing for the new Golden Eagle head logo to come through. Our fans can still purchase the old logo."
Kathy Hayman, general manager of the USM Barnes & Noble, said that the campus bookstore has worked closely with the athletic department on timing old logo merchandise to go on clearance.

"We've actually gotten rid of 99.9 percent of our old eagle head merchandise," she said.

Campus Bookmart floor manager Kathleen Sick said the store has old logo merchandise for 50 percent off.

"But we did have any leftover I think it would be a good idea to donate either a charity or to a third world country, so I feel like that's what we would do," Sick said.
The new design was created by the Hattiesburg based company Rare Designs.
