HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss senior defensive lineman Michael Smith (Birmingham, Ala.) has been voted to the 2015 Conference USA Football preseason defensive team as selected by the league’s 13 coaches and released Tuesday morning.
Smith, a three-year letterwinner for the Golden Eagles, posted 31 tackles (16 solos) in 10 games last season. He added a half tackle for loss during the year to go along with six quarterback hurries. Smith notched a season-best tackle total at UTSA with six stops and added at three tackles in seven different games during the campaign.
For his career, Smith has played in 34 games and has posted 91 tackles (46 solos), as well as 8.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick.
The coaches voted senior quarterback Brandon Doughty of WKU as preseason Offensive Player of the Year, senior defensive back Richard Leonard of FIU as Defensive Player of the Year and senior kick returner Autrey Golden of UTEP as the Special Teams Player of the Year.
