Pedestrian walkway in the works for USM campus

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) presented a check to Southern Miss for funding 80 percent of a Hattiesburg campus construction project.

The project will include a pedestrian, multi-use pathway with brick pave accents and lighting from Eagle Walk to the proposed Hillcrest Residence Hall parking lot. The total cost of the project is $550,000, with MDOT providing $439,268.

"The campus is improving and improving each year aesthetically, it's such a beautiful campus," Southern District Highway commissioner Tom King said. "It's going to be a pedestrian walkway, it will be lit up, it will go from the Eagle Walk to Hillcrest dormitory parking lot area."

The project will tentatively begin in September.

"I look forward to the construction of this pedestrian pathway. This pathway will not only enhance the beauty of our campus but it will also improve the quality of our students experience," USM President Rodney Bennett said.
