HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg animal shelter and PetSmart Charities teamed up Saturday to help make pets in northeast Hattiesburg more healthy and it was all done for free.
Southern Pines Animal Shelter hosted a Pet Health Fair at Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
Veterinarians and volunteers provided rabies and other vaccinations as well as flea and tick treatments.
Some pet owners also set up appointments for free spay and neuter surgeries.
It was the first time for the animal shelter to host an outreach event in the area.
"We know a lot of folks can't afford regular veterinary care and we're trying to step in and fill that gap and make sure that they've at least got the basics for their pets," said Valerie Rachal, special projects manager for Southern Pines Animal Shelter.
"I think it's a good idea," said Tracy Russell, who brought her dog I.J. to be vaccinated. "You know, a lot of people don't have money and it's a good idea."
About 50 pets were seen during the event.
Organizers said two more health fairs will take place before the end of the year.
