Joe's Viewpoint: Distracted Driving

Joe Sciortino Joe Sciortino
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

On Wednesday July 1, just over a week ago, the Mississippi law banning texting or posting to social media while driving went into effect.

There has been a lot of chatter about whether or not the 25 dollar penalty in the first year or the 100 dollar penalty after that will actually deter drivers from engaging in these activities while behind the wheel.

And how will law enforcement know if you were texting or posting? Maybe you were selecting a song from spotify, looking at a map, reading an article, updating an app or taking a selfie.

Might sound funny, but this is just some of what people do while driving. I do believe we need to deter mobile-device-induced distracted driving.

The problem is all the other things we do when driving – like eating, shaving, hunting for something we dropped, applying makeup or correcting the kids in the backseat.

We all need to do a better job of looking at the road and at other cars and it is not getting any easier.

This is today's viewpoint.
