This is a news release from Southern Miss athletics

IRVING, Texas – Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced today the league’s recipients of the 2014-15 Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards, including former Southern Miss right-handed pitcher, James McMahon, who was chosen for the sport of baseball.

The C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year awards are presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport and are determined by the league’s Faculty Athletics Representatives. The award is based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service.

It is the seventh time a Southern Miss baseball student-athlete has collected this honor and McMahon is the sixth different Golden Eagle to accomplish this feat.

Matt Baltz won the first C-USA Scholar Athlete award for Southern Miss baseball during the 1996-97 academic year, followed by Jeff Cook (2002-03), two-time winner Marc Maddox (2004-05, 2005-06), Trey Sutton (2006-07) and Marc Bourgeois (2010-11).

McMahon, who graduated in Construction Engineering Technology in last December with a 3.50 grade point average, earned the C-USA Academic Medal, the Commissioner's Honor Roll five times, the President's List once, the Dean's List three times and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll four times during his time as an undergraduate.

His on-field accomplishments during his final season including being named a second-team Louisville Slugger All-American, while also capturing third-team honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He earned the C Spire Ferriss Trophy for top collegiate baseball player in the state of Mississippi, was the league’s Pitcher of the Year and a member of the C-USA all-tournament team. He also made the C-USA All-Academic team as well.

McMahon’s accomplishment marks the 30th time a Southern Miss student-athlete has won a Scholar Athlete Award for their respective program dating back to the 1995-96 academic year.

The Hattiesburg, Miss., native is currently a member of the Colorado Rockies organization and is playing for their Rookie-level club, the Grand Junction (Colo.) Rockies, in the Pioneer League.

Scholar-athletes were selected from C-USA’s full-time and affiliate institutions in 19 sports (combining indoor and outdoor track & field).
