PETAL, MS (WDAM) - In just a few weeks, it will be illegal to smoke electronic cigarettes in any public buildings in the City of Petal.
E-cigarettes have been added to a city ordinance banning smoking in public places.
It goes into effect Aug. 7.
Last month, the Petal Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to include e-cigarettes in that ordinance, but Mayor Hal Marx vetoed the move.
Tuesday night, Board members overrode the mayor's veto.
"This wasn't to demonize smokers or to criminalize any behavior, it's to protect indoor air quality, which was what the original ordinance in 2007 set out to do," said Brad Amacker, Ward 4 alderman.
"I think private business should have the ability to decide what is allowed inside their doors," said Hal Marx, mayor of Petal. "I don't think the government should be telling people how to run their business in that way, so it was just a philosophical difference," he said.
The Board and mayor Marx agreed on exempting stores that exclusively sell e-cigarettes and related products.
