JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The Jones County Circuit Clerk's Office is now ready to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Despite last week's U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Jones County had decided not to issue them until it got clear instructions from the state attorney general's office.
Jones County Clerk Bart Gavin and other circuit clerks went to Jackson Wednesday. Gavin said after meeting with the governor and the attorney general's office, they now have a better understanding of how to fill out the forms for same-sex couples.
"My job is to issue marriage licenses and I'm going to issue them as I'm instructed to do by the state," Gavin said. "Circuit clerks make no decisions of law. Our task is to enforce the law and implement it as we're instructed to do and I took an oath to do that and I'm going to follow the law."
Gavin's office said no same-sex couples applied for a marriage license Thursday.
