LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Laurel is celebrating the 4th of July with a community day.

Ward 6 Councilman Travares Comegys is inviting everyone in the city to the event Saturday. Barbeque, music and games will be provided from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Sandy T. Gavin Park.

Comegys said the event will give residents the opportunity to get out, fellowship and connect with local law enforcement and city officials.
“Due to recent headlines across America and some of the negative things that we've been seeing, I wanted to do something positive in this community,” said Comegys. “I wanted to take the time to do my part to actually strengthen our community, to bring us closer together in this time, which I think we really need.”

Books and backpacks will also be handed out to children during the event.
