Joe's Viewpoint: Celebrating July 4th

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

In light of the past two week’s events, and the news and strong opinions that have followed and dominated many conversations especially on social media;

I would like to suggest that as we celebrate July 4th we are reminded of what brings us together as a nation, rather than what works to tear us apart.

I think about the second sentence of the Declaration of Independence - the document that declared our intent to remain free and professed our dedication to a unified purpose and moral standards.

It reads as you know, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

So as we celebrate the birthday of America and the freedoms we enjoy, among friends and family, let’s not forget that it is the people, our neighbors, our freedoms and our rights that make this country so great.
