HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Whether it is a precaution, added security or a time to inspire others, Vicki Stephan of Damsel in Defense is ready to equip, empower and educate women through her at-home self-defense classes.

"The police can't be with you everywhere you go," Stephan said of why she encourages women to sign up.

Damsel in Defense is a combination of self-defense classes and sales of defense products, which are marketed for women in bright colors, with a bit of bling, or disguised as beauty products.

"Why do a regular girls night out when you can get together with all of your girl friends and practice being powerful and taking care of yourself?" Stephan said.

She has offered the classes for three months, which she said started as just another business to build on but quickly turned into a passion.

A recent class of Stephan's in Hattiesburg had women of all ages participating, along with a law enforcement official teaching multiple techniques for simple defense methods. In addition to the defense training, Stephan also had a table set up with products such a stun guns, pepper spray for runners, and a travel safe.
