GRENADA COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Grenada County Circuit Clerk Linda Barnette has resigned from her position, according to the Grenada Star.

In a written statement, Barnette said she was resigning early because of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision last week to legalize same sex marriage.

The Grenada Star reports that Deputy Circuit Clerk Michele Redditt has been named acting Grenada County Circuit Clerk following the resignation.

Redditt has worked in the circuit clerk's office for 22 years and is one of the four candidates seeking the post in the upcoming election.

Earlier, Barnette had announced plans to retire after her current term ended.
