HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The AIDS Services Coalition (ASC) is holding a family-friendly event Saturday to encourage folks to get HIV tested.
The event will be at the First Tee Community Center in Vernon Dahmer Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will have food and fun for the kids.
"We're seeing an area around Vernon Dahmer is having an increase in HIV infections, and we want to bring awareness to that community," ASC Community Outreach Worker Andrew Bates said.
Test results will be available within 20 minutes, and participants will be entered to win a flat screen television.
Mississippi is ranked first in the nation for the rate of new HIV infection among 13-24 year olds, and Forrest County is the second highest for the state. One in six people living with HIV is unaware of his or her status.
Saturday's event is sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, DREAM of Hattiesburg, Forrest County Health Department, MAC AIDS Fund, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Planned Parenthood and Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative.
