UPDATE: Jones County man jailed on aggravated assault charge

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Jones County man was arrested for firing an AK-47 assault rifle outside of his home Tuesday, striking a car.

Jones County Deputies were dispatched to Dacetown Road when a call was made for an assault with a gun.

According to Jones County police officials, the complainant told police that she and some friends stopped by the residence of 35-year old Kenneth Pruitt Jr., of Laurel. Pruitt became irate and pulled the AK-47 assault rifle out and began to fire in the air. He proceeded to fire toward the victim and her vehicle. Deputies immediately took Pruitt into custody.

Officials said the victim was in fear for her life and because of the vehicle's damage, she signed charges of aggravated assault.

Pruitt was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Upon further investigation, police found that Pruitt was convicted of uttering and forgery, a felony, in 2007.

Pruitt made his initial appearance on Thursday where Justice Court Judge Howell Beech set bond at $20,000 for aggravated assault and felon in possession of a gun.

Pruitt remains housed in the Jones County Jail.
