HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Mississippi State Department of Health said Tuesday that water is now safe to drink for Hattiesburg residents.

Health officials lifted the precautionary "boil water alert" for the City of Hattiesburg system in Forrest County.

Bonner Analytical Laboratory performed tests on the water and confirmed that it is now safe to drink.

According to a news release on the departments website, the original notice was issued Saturday.

Water sampling showed the presence of Total Coliform and E. coli. bacteria, according to the release.

"The United States Environmental Protection Agency sets drinking water standards and has determined that the presence of E. coli is a serious health concern," according to the release.
