Dr. Deanne Stephens Nuwer has been named Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Letters at The University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Park campus. Nuwer has previously served as an associate professor of History and History Pedagogy at the Gulf Park campus.
Nuwer earned a Ph.D. and Master's of Science degree in American History from Southern Miss. She joined the faculty at her alma mater in 1998 and became an associate professor in 2000.
Nuwer, a specialist in pedagogical methods, has trained history majors seeking state licensure to teach social studies. She has also taught the Social Studies Method course required of all students in the Social Studies Licensure program. A writer of numerous articles, including several about women in history and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Nuwer has also edited the "Dictionary of United States History: Mississippi." Her last book, "Plague Among the Magnolias: The 1878 Yellow Fever Epidemic in Mississippi," was published in June 2009.
Nuwer, Mississippi Humanities Teacher of the Year in 1998, is excited to be a part of the College of Arts and Letters Gulf Park campus team.
