Former MHP officer involved in 2014 fatal crash indicted for manslaughter

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A former Mississippi Highway Patrol officer involved in a 2014 fatal crash in Hattiesburg has been arrested indicted for manslaughter.

Jonathan Edward Johnson, a former MHP Troop J officer, was served with his indictment which was returned by a Forrest County Grand Jury.

According to the indictment Johnson did unlawfully and feloniously kill and slay Thelma Gill, 81, a human being, without malice, by his culpable negligence while he (Johnson) was engaged in the perpetration of the crime of speeding.

According to Hattiesburg Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Jon Traxler, a crash involving a MHP officer in his patrol car and another vehicle at Highway 49 north of the south gate of Camp Shelby left one person dead on October 13, 2014.

According to Forrest county Coroner Butch Benedict the victim was identified as Thelma Gill, 81. Benedict stated that she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnson, the state trooper, was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries where he was treated and released.

The scene was investigated by the Hattiesburg Police Department and through the investigation, the case was turned over to the district attorney's office to move forward.
